President Uhuru Kenyatta has said the country managed to achieve gender equality in military administration during his tenure.

Delivering his farewell speech on Friday at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang'ata, Uhuru said gender equality policies were also championed in other government departments and ministries.

He said they were in a bid to achieve empowerment of women in governance.

"In the last 10 years, my administration adopted initiatives that saw Kenya spring on the cause of realizing gender equality," he said.

He said women are pillars of any society that wishes to succeed.

"They have the potential to influence positive change," he added.

Uhuru mentioned Ambassador Raychelle Omamo and Monica Juma who have served as cabinet secretaries in the Ministry of Defence.

Omamo, who is the current Foreign Affairs CS served as the Defence CS from May 15, 2013, to January 14, 2020.

Juma served as the Defence CS from January 14, 2020, to September 30, 2021.

He also pointed out that his administration saw the appointment of Fatuma Ahmed as the first female Major General of the Kenyan Military.

Major General Ahmed was appointed on July 14, 2018.

"I believe all of this is progress towards involving and ensuring that gender is taken into account in all policies and in all areas of governance," Uhuru said.

In his tribute to Uhuru, KDF General Robert Kibochi said the outgoing President's memories will be left with the military.

"You have left behind one of the finest military institutions on the continent," he said.
