Azimio allied senators on Thursday walked out of the chamber after the clerk, Jeremiah Nyegenye declined to entertain their plea to suspend election of the speaker.

The lot had put a spirited fight to suspend the move on several grounds.

They said nominated senators were not given the opportunity to apply for deputy speaker.

The senators added that CVs provided did not contain crucial information such as clearance letters from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Led by Homa Bay senator Moses Kajwang, they announced that the Azimio candidate for speaker Kalonzo Musyoka would noty take part in a flawed process.

Soon after taking his oath of office, Kajwang called for the suspension of the speaker.

“Let the foundation of this Senate not be a foundation of impunity and of denying our women opportunity to participate,” he said.

He was backed by Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo who said the issues raised by Kajwang were weighty and could not wait until a speaker is elected.

“There is a lacuna but we did not anticipate such a thing to arise. Clerk, you need to make a decision on this,” she said.

Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye said he had the jurisdiction to rule on the matter raised by Kajwang.

Nyegenye then ruled that the election of a speaker proceeds and if there are any other matters on the election of a deputy speaker, which would be the next order, it would be discussed.

“I, therefore, rule that we proceed with the business of order no. 4 and if there will be an objection to order number 5, then it will be canvassed,” he said.
