Volleyball giants Cheptil boys and girls are favoured to dominate this weekend’s Nandi County Secondary Schools  Term Two Games at the Kapsabet High School grounds.

After finishing second at both the national championships and East Africa school championships, former champions Cheptil girls will be hoping to recapture the title with their eyes trailed on the regional show.

Cheptil head of the games department, Fredrick Were, said they want all the three teams, volleyball (girls and boys) and basketball girls to look beyond the county and national level.

This time around, he said their boys’ volleyball team is stronger than the girls' but they will still have to be at their best to fend off the opposition and secure the single slot for the region championships.

“Our target is to have all the three teams qualify to the regionals and even make it to the national. We have been doing well in volleyball,  finishing second at the national and East Africa last time out but the team is not as strong as in the past years," Were said.

He added: "The coronavirus affected our training and the government also postponed school games due to the elections among other issues.”

In 2019, the last time school games happened, the girls' side lost the national and East Africa titles to Kwanthanze, both home and away.

“We had a good team then but now we are struggling with hopes of rectifying a few things,” added Were.

However, he was full of praise for the boys’ team that has been in training even during the coronavirus period.

Were said the boys’ team ended their journey in 2019 at the county level after falling to Lelmokwo Boys at the county level finals.

“This time, we have a good boys team because we had good training during the coronavirus period. Working with boys was easier than the girls. We made it to the national finals at the 2017 championships and we hope to reach the finals this year,” he promised.

Gheptil girls' basketball team ended their journey at the regional level last time out after falling to St Brigit’s, Kiminini.
