President William Ruto has called Meshack Ojwang’, the father of the late Albert Ojwang’, and donated Sh2 million to support the grieving family.
Similarly, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also phoned Meshack to offer his condolences following Albert’s mysterious death in police custody.
Albert, the only child of Mzee Ojwang’, died in police hands in Nairobi after being arrested from his rural home in Homa Bay on June 7.
The news of the President’s donation was announced by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who led other leaders in condoling with the family at their rural home on June 16, 2025.
“The President called and condoled with you and your wife, and shared how deeply pained he is as a father. Today, he has sent us with Sh2 million,” Wanga told Albert’s father.
She added, “I will also donate a three-bedroom house so that Mzee will have a decent home. Mourners will come, sit in a tent, eat and leave—but you deserve a better place to live.”
Wanga further revealed that Raila also called Mzee Ojwang’ from abroad to offer his condolences. The governor called for swift prosecution of those involved in Albert’s death, saying justice must not be delayed.
“There should be no sacred cows in this case. We want those responsible for Albert’s murder brought to justice. This tragedy has left a deep sadness in this home,” she said.
She emphasized that it was heartbreaking for the family to lose their only child in police custody and urged authorities to do more to ease the family’s pain.
“We are deeply saddened here at home,” Wanga said.
Mzee Ojwang’ expressed his gratitude to both the President and Raila, saying their support was invaluable.
“I thank the President for taking up my son’s case as his own and standing with our family,” he said.
“He called me and offered his condolences. Even Raila Odinga called from abroad to console me. The governor has also supported me throughout this painful journey.”
