Violence, intimidation most reported electoral offences - DPP

The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has said that violence and intimidation are the most reported election-related offences.

In data seen by the Star, the DPP stated that as of Thursday, August 11, these offences accounted for 22 per cent of reported cases.

These offences were followed by bribery related to elections at 14 per cent while voter offences and hate speech cases were reported at 12 per cent.

Publication of false information was reported at 9 per cent, ballot paper offences at 7 per cent, and preparation to commit a felony at 5 per cent.

Breach of electoral code of conduct, creating disturbance and interfering with election material was also reported at 3 per cent, while offences by IEBC were reported at 2 per cent.

Other offences reported accounted for 8 per cent.

In the data, Nairobi County recorded the most offences at 11 per cent and was followed by Kilifi County at 11 per cent, while Narok recorded 8 per cent.

Laikipia, Homa Bay and Uasin Gishu recorded 7 per cent of these offences each, and Marsabit 5 per cent.

Kakamega, Migori, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot and Kiambu, each reported at 4 per cent.

At 3 per cent were; Kisii, Wajir, Mandera, Machakos and Murang'a counties, while Bungoma, Bomet, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Meru and Kitui all had 1 per cent.
