President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday extended his tour to Kakamega State Lodge for issuance of Charters to eight universities.
Half of the universities are private institutions.
The public universities included Kaimosi Friends University in Vihiga, Alupe University in Busia, Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay and Tharaka University in Tharaka Nithi county.
The President was accompanied by CS Eugene Wamalwa and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
Private universities issued with the Charters are Lukenya University of Makueni, Zetech University of Kiambu, Kiriri Women's University of Science and Technology in Nairobi and East African University of Kajiado.
Uhuru later visited Nzoia Sugar Company in Bungoma county to assess the progress of the ongoing rehabilitation of the company.
He will also meet sugarcane farmers in the county.
Other projects the President launched include the Dada Export Processing Zone Limited, a garment manufacturing factory for the export market.
Uhuru has been on a mission to in commissioning different projects across the country.
On Monday, he launched the new Kisumu Railway station and on Tuesday, he commissioned the Kisumu Shipyard and the MV Uhuru II ship, Kenya's first locally-assembled vessel.
