Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has showered UDA presidential candidate William Ruto with praise after the presidential debate.

Gachagua expressed his confidence in Ruto, stating that he has what it takes to push for the victory of Kenya Kwanza Alliance in the August 9 General Election.

"Congratulations my boss, our Kenya Kwanza captain for not abandoning Kenyans when they needed to hear from you. The articulation of our plan and your passion is admirable. Kenyans are confident that a real leader will shepherd our country on a positive trajectory," he said.

On Tuesday, Ruto debated alone as his opponent who they were to face off the debate with, Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga did not turn up for the debate.

Ruto was in the second tier after Agano party presidential candidate Waihiga Mwaure who was on the first tier, although he also debated alone.

During the debate, Ruto said he had an explicit plan on how he would serve Kenyans when elected and reduce cost of living which has recently been an increasing challenge.

When asked what the plan entails, the Deputy President said reduction of taxes on imported fuel was part of his strategy to ease the burden on Kenyan households.

He said there are about 15 different taxes levied on fuel which drive up the cost of the product.

"We need to interrogate these 15 taxes which ones can we put aside so that like other taxes we can reduce the taxation," Ruto said.

Rachel Ruto, the wife of Deputy President William Ruto also showered him with praise.

In a statement, Mama Rachel said the DP was outstanding in the debate, as she prayed that God sees him through the presidential journey.

"Congratulations Bill. You were perfect. The last man standing. May God carry you through," she said in a tweet.
