Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chair Wafula Cebukati has warned politicians against profiling the agency staff because of their tribal origins.
While explaining the ballot tender saga in which he was accused of colluding with Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula to hand over the deal to a Greek Firm, Chebukati revealed profiling of their staff has made their ICT officers frightened.
Chebukati said the fact that he and Wetangula come from the same locality has made a section of leaders level wrong information about the commission ahead of the polls.
"There is a deliberate move to profile staff of IEBC, commissioners and staff. There is a serious social campaign that is ongoing," Chebukati said.
"It is actually sad that this pointing time we have people who are hellbent on trying to profile IEBC staff. I think it is unfortunate and it is an issue that people who are behind it should stop."
He said the death of former IEBC ICT director Chris Musando has made a section of them fear that their fate may end up in such a manner.
"If you look at our staff in the commission, especially ICT, they are now frightened because of seeing their photos on so many gutter presses on social media posts," he stated.
"Don't forget that it was around this time, July 28, five years ago, when our staff was murdered. And this then becomes a frightening moment when you see Commission chair and staff being profiled."
Chebukati said the IEBC was an independent institution, with no political interference, affirming that they do not allow external forces to direct them.
"We do our work in accordance with the law. We are only answerable to the Constitution and the laws of the land," he added.
