A man from Kibera slums who allegedly tortured his six-month-old twins and assaulted their mother appeared in court on Wednesday.

Fredrick Okello was arraigned before Kibera senior principal magistrate Esther Boke and was charged with causing grievous harm.

The twins, the prosecution told the court, are currently admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital where they are being treated and one of them is in the Intensive care unit.

According to the charge sheet, the accused person committed the offence on July 6 in Raila slums, Kibera in Nairobi County.

The prosecution said the mother of the infants had left them with their father and went to visit their neighbour but upon returning back she found the twins crying in pain.

They further stated that the accused allegedly assaulted the twin’s mother when she tried to inquire about what had happened.

The court was told the mother’s efforts to take them to hospital were unsuccessful as the accused locked her inside the house.

The court papers say that she was able to take them to the hospital the following day and the matter was reported.

Court prosecutor Nancy Kerubo told the court that one of the twin's legs is fractured and urged the court to deny the accused person bond.

The man denied the charges and was released on a bond of Sh500, 000.

The case will be mentioned on July 26.
