DP Ruto's running mate on Monday said NIS, in its advice, however, warned arresting and charging him would burn the country.
“Yeye alikuwa ameambiwa mshtaki huyu Linturi, mshtaki huyu Gachagua na pia huyu Ruto atafutiwe makesi," the Mathira MP said on Monday.
This loosely translates as,"He had been told to charge Linturi and I and also cook charges for Ruto".
The plan, he said, was to use Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti to advance the scheme and ensure Ruto and his allies have fake charges leveled against them.
"Kuna kitu angefanya? Si yeye ni police officer? Si yeye ni mtu wa amri? Watu wa NIS wakamwambia nyinyi, hii nchi itachomeka, wakaogopa,” he told the crowd during a campaign rally at Buuri in Meru on Monday.
This, he said was after Ruto's fallout with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Gachagua, however, assured Kinoti that their administration does not intend to go after him since he was a victim of circumstance.
“Si DCI Kinoti anatoka hapa, nataka nimwambie yeye arelax wewe huna shida yoyote. Si wewe ni mtu wa kuambiwa? Ametusukumia makesi lakini si yeye alitumwa na Kenyatta? (We want to tell DCI Kinoti who hails from this area to remain calm. We have no problem with him as we know he is being misused by the President to level fake charges against us)” he posed.
The team was on its third-day tour of Mt Kenya East as they seek to solidify their support.
Ruto led the team that comprised of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, senators Kindiki Kithure (Tharaka Nithi), Mithika Linturi (Meru) and MPs from the region.
The group also drummed up support for UDA candidates running for various seats on the party's ticket.
