Greek firm to print 200m ballot papers for Sh3bn - IEBC

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission( IEBC) CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan has said the ballot papers will be printed by a Greek firm.

Marjan said the Inform Lykos is situated in Athens with a backup site in Romania and will be responsible for the papers to be used In the August 9, general elections.

Inform Lykos was Awarded the tender totalling Sh3 billion.

On Monday, the Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga through his lawyer Paul Mwangi issued demands to the electoral body regarding the elections, among which was the location of the printing firm.

The Coalition also wanted to know the ballot papers' design, security features as well as transport and storage logistics plan, and the statutory results.

"We request information on when the commission intends to travel to the printing press with representatives of the political parties to inspect the printing of ballot papers, statutory forms and other election materials," the letter by Mwangi read.

IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati promised to have travel plans to visit the firm soon.

"Dates will be given when the team is going. Unfortunately, we don't have a budget to finance the stakeholders so we shall ask you to look into your kitty," he said.

The presidential Returning Officer announced that the ballot paper printing began on Sunday.

IEBC said the process commenced with printing 120 million ballot papers, considering the little and limited time left before the polls.

Inform Lyko is however expected to deliver over 200 million papers.

Chebukati noted that the printing will cater for the 14,552 candidates whose nominations faced no disputes.
