Uhuru, world leaders arrive for Commonwealth summit in Kigali

The summit was to take place in 2020 but was twice postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Kigali, Rwanda for the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Uhuru was received by Foreign Affairs CS Raychelle Omamo and Kenya’s High Commissioner to the UK Manoah Esipisu. 

Senior officials of the Rwandan Government were also present at the airport for his Thursday evening arrival.

The meeting brings together delegates from 54 Commonwealth member countries.

"During the meeting, they will discuss and address global issues and Commonwealth priorities," State House spokes-lady Kanze Dena said.

The theme of the meeting is ‘Delivering a common future: connecting, innovating and transforming’.

Commonwealth leaders have been flocking to the Rwandan capital for the global summit since Monday.

Initially the summit was to take place in 2020 but was twice postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales – who is representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the head of the Commonwealth – arrived in Kigali on Tuesday accompanied by Duchess of Cornwall.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived on Wednesday night while his British counterpart Boris Johnson arrived on Thursday.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Namibian President Hage Geingob are also among the African Commonwealth leaders in Kigali for the summit.
