Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said overall candidates who obtained Grade A in the 2021 KCSE Examination were 1,138 (0.14%).
This was an increase compared to the 893 students who obtained grade A in 2020 (0.12%).
Speaking during the release of KCSE exam results on Saturday, Magoha said the number of candidates with minimum university entry qualification of Grade C+ and above rose to 145,145 (17.49%) in the year 2021 KCSE Examination compared to 143,140 (19.03%) in 2020.
"The percentage of candidates with a mean Grade of C+ and above has declined from 19.03 to 17.49," he said.
Continually, he said the number of candidates with a minimum TVET Diploma courses qualification of grade C- and above in 2021 was 325,896 (39.27%).
"We, therefore, need to invest more in TVET institutions where the bulk of our KCSE Examination graduands will study," Magoha said.
Last year, the overall grade summary for 2020 KCSE results, 893 candidates, representing 0.12 per cent, scored a mean grade of an A plain and above.
A total of 6420 candidates, 0.85 per cent, scored grade A- (minus). A total of 7313 candidates scored grade A- (minus) and above.
14,427 candidates scooped grade Grade B+ (plus) with 21,740 being the cumulative number of candidates who scored at least a grade B+.
A total of 25,207 candidates scored grade B (plain). 46,947 candidates scored at least a grade B plain and above.
