Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has said bursaries and scholarships should only be given to students in boarding schools.

According to Magoha, the government will prioritize bursaries and scholarships for 2021 KCPE candidates who will join boarding schools.

Speaking during the announcing of the placement of Form Ones on Monday, Magoha urged members of parliament to ensure fairness in the process of allocating funds.

Magoha noted that the bursaries and scholarships should not only be given to students from one area but rather be distributed to students from other localities.

He fingered a section of deceitful politicians' pocketing some of the bursary money meant for day secondary students.

"The government pays school fees for students in a day secondary school, so If you're going to give a lot of funds to such candidates, that money may end up in their pockets," he said.

Magoha noted that his Ministry would advocate for bursaries and scholarships to be given to students going to boarding schools.

"The only thing day school students need is school uniform and lunch money," he added.

Some 38,797 KCPE candidates were selected to join national schools on May 3, 2022.

Magoha says 214,960 others have been placed in extra county schools while 258,456 will be enrolled in county schools.

Another 726,311 students were enrolled in sub-county schools while 2,045 were placed in special needs schools.

Magoha said more than 800 students from informal settlements are among those selected to join national and extra county schools.

He said their selection was based on affirmative action and was purely on merit.
