The Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi is the latest leader in the country to poke holes in the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum.

Speaking on Thursday during an engagement session with Kenyans through a TwitterSpace hosted by Ahmed Mohamed ((ASMALi), the speaker said that the government failed to engage Kenyans about the project.

“Even though the ministry keeps saying that there was sufficient public participation, there is a need for further consultation. Both teachers and parents are complaining that they are not sufficiently knowledgeable in it,” Muturi said.

He added: “That should be a reason enough for the curriculum to be put on hold".

Muturi proposed that the government should also engage with the National Treasury to ensure what is needed is availed.

Currently, the government is rolling out the 2-6-6-3 curriculum to Grade 6 after publishers were asked to submit learning materials for evaluation.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development will evaluate and approve materials to be used for teaching and learning in schools.

The CBC moves to Grade 6 next year.

This means pioneer cohorts will exit primary school and join junior secondary school under the new system in 2023.

KICD chief executive Charles Ong'ondo said on Friday that the institute has asked publishers to submit course materials for the Grade 5 rollout for vetting which starts on April 6.
