The Nubian community is calling on the government to speed up the process of their recognition in Kenya.
The group said it has been facing discrimination regarding the legitimacy of its citizenry.
Their woes began when the British government failed to legitimise the community's existence in the country.
Nubian Rights Forum C.E.O Shaffi Hussein said they are bonafide citizens of the Republic of Kenya yet they have been facing a lot of discrimination because of the legitimacy of their citizenship.
He was speaking during a press briefing in Kibera on Tuesday.
“We petitioned the national assembly through our MP Imran Okoth on June 9 2021, when the matter was tabled before the house, pursuant to the provision of standing order 227(1) to the departmental committee for administration and national security for consideration and reporting,” Hussein said.
The community prayed that the National Assembly through the departmental committee on Administration and national security intervene and ensure their issues are sorted.
They also want their inclusion secured in all government portals and make any other recommendations that it deems fit in the circumstances of the petition.
Hussein said it is not only the Nubians who are crying foul but also Kenyans from other parts of the country like Baringo.
"The Kenyan system is bad because when you try to stand up on behalf of your people, you will be compromised or be called by the DCI to record statements,” Hussein said.
They called upon the president to fully recognize the Nubian community like any other tribe in Kenya.
“Nubians have been existing in Kenya since 1817. They are the first army ever in Kenya as a subject of Kings' African rifles. The failure of the British government shall cost the lives of the Nubian community,” said Hussein.
The Nubian community said they will call for a peaceful demonstration in the next 30 days if their issues are not solved.
