Five people died and ten others were hospitalized after drinking an illicit brew at Canaan village in Kamukuywa ward, Kimilili constituency, Bungoma county.

The survivors were rushed to the hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Two others, among them the woman who brewed the traditional liquor, are still admitted as they continue to recuperate under the watchful eye of doctors.

The incident comes just a week after one person died and three others were  admitted to the hospital in Uasin Gishu county after consuming a lethal illicit brew.

Uasin Gishu county commissioner Stephen Kihara said the poisoning occurred at Kuinet village, Soy subcounty.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, victims of the latest incident complained of stomachache and general body weakness.

They said they developed the symptoms soon after consuming the brew, popularly known as chang'aa.

"My stomach got upset and my eyes developed issues. Right now I can't even see clearly, naona gizagiza,' one victim said.

The residents urged the hospital to carry out tests and inform them of the poisonous ingredient in the brew.

Kibingei ward MCA Aggrey Mulongo, asked the county government to come up with a policy to regulate consumption and usage of chang'aa and busaa. The brews are illegal in Kenya.

“These brews, if made well, cannot harm our people and there is need to have the county regulate them,” he said.
