Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai announced the changes

Coast, Rift Valley and Central regions have received new police commanders in changes announced by Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai.

The new Coast regional police commander is Titus Karuri who was moved from Central, swapping positions with Musyoki Manase.

The changes were announced on March 18.

The new Rift Valley police commander is Tom Odero. He had been serving at the National Counter Terrorism Centre and swapped positions with Fredrick Ochieng.

Former Nairobi police boss Augustine Nthumbi was moved to police headquarters Vigilance House as a liaison officer there.

The acting police boss for Nairobi is James Mugera.

The regional commanders, who are eight in number, act as former Provincial Police Officers, which was scrapped with the ushering in of the 2010 Constitution.

Police headquarters said the changes were aimed at boosting operations in the country.

A number of police commanders are yet to be promoted for years, which has affected their command in general. They share ranks with their supposed juniors yet they are supposed to command them which is affecting the command structure, insiders said.

Officials said the promotions are pending at the National Police Service Commission, which is supposed to brief the president on their plans before announcing the same.

More changes are expected in the service in the coming days ahead of the polls in August.

Elsewhere, more than 400 police officers serving under the Anti Stock Theft Unit have been moved to the general duties.

Most of the affected officers have been serving at the ASTU for more than 20 years. ASTU is under the Administration Police Service.

Most personnel from the General Service Unit and ASTU are usually redeployed to the general duties of Kenya Police after serving for some time.

And there is lobbying to retain more than 10 senior police commanders whose term in office has lapsed after hitting the retirement age.

They may be retained to run the polls and leave later.

Officials said the Commission is yet to sit and discuss the names but the idea is on the table and slated for discussion.

Chairperson Eliud Kinuthia said the issue will be considered.
