Some three suspected al Shabaab militants were killed over the weekend in a clash with security teams at Takaba in Mandera county.

The clash happened at a watering point on Saturday night.

Police said about 10 militants had gathered at the watering point when a team of security officials manning the area confronted them.

Three rifles were recovered at the scene while the rest of the militants managed to escape.

Police suspect there were more injuries on the side of the militants owing to the blood stains that were traced towards the border.

One of the police officers was shot and injured in the elbow. He was flown to Nairobi for medical attention.

Police said dozens of gunmen are roaming in the region but efforts to vanquish them are ongoing through more deployments.

This came as efforts are being made to trace a clinical officer who is missing after he was abducted from his workstation in Fino, Mandera.

The victim identified as Jackson Kabuu was initially abducted alongside three other residents who were released.

Officials said they believe he was taken because of his work, to probably treat injured militants inside their controlled region in Somalia.

He was picked up at about 10pm on Friday and his whereabouts are not known.

They escaped towards the nearby Kenya- Somalia border.

Northeastern head of police George Seda said they are making efforts to trace the whereabouts of the missing officer.

He had been serving at the local medical facility since 2015.

Two Cuban doctors who were abducted in a Mandera attack in 2019 are also believed to be treating patients inside Somalia, in a region controlled by the militants.

The terrorists have been targeting Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties after breaching security zones. This has left dozens of civilians and security officials dead and wounded.

This year, close to 20 people including security officials have been killed in separate attacks in the area.

The terrorists have been planting explosives on the routes used by the security agencies and attacking them. They have also been targeting communication masts, bringing them down.

Transport and education have been grounded as there are few movements in fear of attacks. Tens of of teachers who are non-locals have been forced to flee.

Police have been mounting operations to deter any terror attacks.

The border region has borne the brunt of repeated attacks from militants who are at times aided by residents.

The area is near the Somalia border and the militants usually cross at will and stage attacks before escaping back.
