IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has announced the start of voter registration for Kenyan citizens residing outside the country.
In a statement on Friday, Chebukati said that the exercise that started on January 21, will continue for 15 days and will be carried out in 18 registration centres.
The centres that were earlier gazetted include the US, Canada, UK, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Africa.
Chebukati added that due to the Covid related travel restrictions and logistical challenges, the exercise will not start in the UK (Kenya High Commission in London), Canada (Kenya High Commission in Ottawa, Kenya Honorary Consulate in Toronto, and Kenya Honorary Consulate in Vancouver), and the United Arab Emirates.
“The commission regrets the delay in rolling out the voter registration exercise in the affected countries and is closely working out with the relevant authorities to ensure it kicks off. Upon commencement, the exercise will be extended by the number of days lost to ensure that eligible voters are availed the set 15 days for registration,” Chebukati said.
In a separate matter on the same day, the chairperson officially gazetted Tuesday, August 9, 2022, as the date of the election.
This means the political parties will have to submit the Party Membership lists to the Commission on or before Saturday, April 9, 2022.
A political party intending to present a presidential candidate in this election shall conduct its primaries and resolve interparty disputes on or before Friday, April, 22.
Also, candidates intending to participate in the election as independent candidates shall not be members of any registered political party by Monday, May 2, 2022, being at least 3 months before the general election.
A public officer who intends to contest in the election shall resign from public office within six (6) months before the date of the election being on or before Wednesday, February 9, 2022.
