Lamu mother dies after police vehicle hits motorbike

A mother died and her son was seriously injured after a motorbike they were riding was hit by a police Land Cruiser in Lamu.

The accident occurred on the Mokowe-Hindi Road at the Kenya Forest Research Institute junction as the driver of the Land Cruiser was making a right turn from the Mokowe trading centre.

The deceased, identified as Mariam Were, was riding with her son Mahad Ismael from Hindi town to Mokowe in Lamu west when the accident occurred.

Both were rushed to the Mokowe Hospital where the woman was pronounced dead on arrival, while the survivor was referred to the King Fahad Hospital in Lamu island for specialized treatment.

In 2015, 27-year-old Paul Mungai died on the spot after he was hit by a police Land Cruiser as he tried to cross the road on his motorcycle in Hindi town.

The vehicle was heading to Lamu from Mpeketoni before the accident happened.

In July this year, a 21-year-old man died on the spot after his motorcycle crashed head-on into a speeding lorry near the Ndeu Roadblock along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road.

In December 2020, a 23-year-old boda boda rider died on the spot after his bike rammed into a speeding Land Cruiser at Mainguvu area along the Mapenya-Mpeketoni road in Lamu county.

In October 2019, three people were injured in a road accident involving a Kenya Red Cross Society vehicle and a Toyota Wish at Sese area on the Hongwe-Mpeketoni road.

This month, four Mvita MP Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir's staff died after the car they were travelling in rolled after a tyre burst between Koreni and Milihoi along the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road.

The accident occurred on November 13.
