Ousted Commissioner-General of the Kenya Prisons Service, Wycliffe Ogallo's press address that had earlier been scheduled for 7pm, has been called off at the last minute.
The details behind the canceling of the address have not been issued, but the Star has confirmed that Ogalo has been summoned at the State House, according to his lawyer.
The address was to take place in Lang'ata (Ngei Phase 2, House number 154), where Ogalo was expected to explain the circumstances surrounding his forcible removal from the office.
Ogalo and two other top officers at Kamiti prisons were arrested from the Magereza building Wednesday and taken DCI for grilling.
The move came after the President met with top officials at the Interior Ministry led by CS Fred Matiangi over the issue.
Even so, the National Police Service in a statement later dismissed the arrest terming it as "inaccurate".
"The reporting appearing in mainstream and social media that the former Kenya Prisons Service’s Commissioner-General Mr. Wycliffe Ogallo has been arrested by police is not accurate as stated," NPS tweeted.
"This is to clarify that police only facilitated a smooth and seamless handover of office."
His lawyer Assa Nyakundi later confirmed Ogalo was released unconditionally from the DC headquarters.
Nyakundi said he was asked to leave without any explanation.
“He has been released unconditionally. He is now free but I don’t know about the others,” he said.
Earlier during the day, a crisis meeting was held at State House over the 'jailbreak' of three inmates convicted of terror offences and probably aided by prison warders.
The situation is deeply disturbing if Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, the country's most secure, cannot contain the country's most dangerous convicts.
Further, indications the escape was aided by wardens themselves suggest the security system itself is flawed, and despite vetting those who are supposed to keep Kenyans safe are willing to expose them to appalling danger.
