Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's friend turned foe - former Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama - has hit out at him over a statement he made hinting at the possibility of working with Deputy President William Ruto.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Muthama likened Kalonzo to a hyena that split into two trying to decide which homestead to go to.

"This man has no stand, neither does he know which direction to take the Kamba community because he is always engulfed in self-aggrandizement..." he said.

Muthama's comments come after Kalonzo was quoted in an interview with the Nation as saying,  "If you hear them looking for me, tell them I am available because Kenyans must consult. If they want to reach out to me, they are most welcome."

This was in response to a question on whether he was partnering with Ruto.

Kalonzo fell out with Muthama who was his key ally and financier of the Wiper party after he refused to work with Ruto, a union that Muthama was highly in support of.

Muthama had influenced Kalonzo's political direction, from 2007 when he ran for president and teamed up with Mwai Kibaki the following year to become his VP.

In the 2013 and 2017 polls, Muthama was a key deal maker in handing Raila the presidential ticket with Kalonzo as his deputy.

Muthama is currently Chairman of Deputy President William Ruto-led UDA party.

There has been speculation over Kalonzo's possible partnership with ODM leader Raila Odinga in the 2022 General Election.

The massive defections by Mt Kenya leaders to Ruto’s camp have brought to the fore the crucial place Kalonzo holds in ODM leader Raila's 2022 bid.

Since it remains unknown how Mt Kenya will vote in the President Uhuru Kenyatta succession race, it could well be that Raila needs the former Vice President to build a political juggernaut against Ruto.

However, the former Prime Minister could be caught on the horns of a dilemma on what to offer Kalonzo and also balance the interests of Mt Kenya.

In the predicament,  about 1.2 million votes in Ukambani that Raila bagged in the 2013 and 2017 elections are now under threat as he embarks on his fifth stab at the presidency.

Political observers hold that Kalonzo is important, whichever side he throws his weight behind, and therefore cannot be ignored.

However, it is also commonly agreed among pundits there are factors that could work against his reunion with Raila, age 76, on a larger scale, hence, the need to appease the Mt Kenya vote bastion.
