Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has sworn in five new TSC commissioners.

MPs approved the five nominees to be members of the Teachers Service Commission last week.

The committee on Education and Research said Nicodemus Ojuma Anyang, Christine Kahindi, Sharon Kisire, Annceta Wafukho, and Salesa Adano Abudo were found suitable to serve in the commission.

When she was officiating the swearing-in on Monday, Koome said even though the officials are getting into the office, their  leadership should be the light that shines.

"I would urge you as Commissioners of the Teachers Service Commission to use the opportunity availed by your appointment to do all you can to ensure our education system does not leave any groups behind," she said.

Koome said the pandemic should force Kenyans to look at the education system and re-imagine it anew.

"Indeed, the constitutional goal of creating a socially just state and society demands that you work towards the realisation of a quality education system that is accessible to every segment of our society," she said.

"The oath which you have taken today should guide you in your day to day work. You must never depart from the law and you must serve this country to the best of your abilities, bearing in mind the enormous responsibilities placed upon you."

The five will replace Beatrice Adu, Mbarak Twahir, Kinoti Imanyara, Albert Ekirapa, and Tache Gollo whose terms expired.

The names were forwarded to the National Assembly on August 12 for vetting and approval in line with the TSC Act No.20 of 2012.

The Act stipulates that the nominees ought to be approved by Members of Parliament.

Upon receiving the names, the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi referred them to the Committee on Education chaired by Busia Woman Representative Florence Mutua.

The five TSC commissioners will serve for a period of six years.

Members of Parliament had been called for special sittings on Wednesday to among other things, approve the nominees to the IEBC.
