Kenya is experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Ministry of Health has warned.
With this, there is increased demand for ICU beds in hospitals to accommodate the high number of infections.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has asked county governments to ensure availability of sufficient oxygen.
Kagwe reiterated that the oxygen should be properly piped in the various health facilities.
He spoke on Wednesday during a press conference at Afya House on Covid-19 update.
"We can already see an increase of demand of ICU beds as well as oxygen requirement,"Kagwe said.
As of Tuesday, the CS said, close to 400 people admitted in hospitals countrywide needed oxygen.
This is an increase from the last week which was below 100.
The total virus caseload in the country increased to 198,935 after 976 people tested positive from a sample size of 6,896 tests.
172 patients were admitted in ICU, 37 of whom were on ventilatory support and 84 on supplemental oxygen.
"We are appealing with county governments to increase their capacity of oxygen supply," Kagwe said.
Meanwhile, Kagwe has announced that Turkana will now have a testing center for Covid-19.
He handed over an ambulance donated by IGAD to Turkana County governor Josephat Nanok.
