Lusaka convenes special sitting to swear-in Abdulkadir Haji as senator

Senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka has convened a special meeting of the House on Tuesday.

The agenda of the session will be to swear in Abdulkadir Haji as senator for Garissa county.

IBEC gazetted Haji as senator-elect to succeed his father, Yusuf Haji who passed on early in the year.

The late Senator Yusuf Haji's son, Haji, will take over from his father in Garissa.

No one challenged Haji for the seat.

"...and declares the person listed in the 1st and 2nd Column to the Schedule duly elected as the Senator, Garissa County," IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said.

The senators will also consider the Division of Revenue Bill that was presented to the House last week from the National Assembly

The crucial bill splits between the national and county governments revenues generated nationally.

The House has until April 30, 2021 to dispense with the bill to ensure the counties prepare their budgets.

"We have until April 30 but we are going to shorten the process because the standing orders allows us to do so. We shall complete second and third reading on the same day," Minority chief whip Mutula Kilonzo Jr told the Star.

The Bill was introduced in the House last week is currently undergoing public participation spearheaded by the House Finance and Budget commuter chaired by Kirinyaga Senator Charles Kibiru.
