County staff in Mombasa have issued a seven-day strike notice after the government failed to end persistent salary delays and provide medical cover.
Through the Kenya County Government Workers Union, the staff have accused the executive of failing to implement their collective bargaining agreement and remit deductions.
In a notice dated August 25, 2020, the workers through the union’s secretary general Roba Duba vowed to paralyse work from Thursday.
“Workers of Mombasa county government shall down their tools, paralysing every sector on September 2, 2020, to compel you to address the issues," he said.
The union says the executive has breached Section 17 of the Employment Act, 2007 by failing to consistently pay salaries on the due date.
On the issue of medical cover, the union says the executive has remained mum despite the NHIF cover of over 4,000 county staff having lapsed in June.
“It is a mandatory requirement for employers to provide sufficient and proper medical cover for their employees as envisaged under section 34 of the Employment Act, 2007,” Duba stated.
