Magufuli issues tough new rules to media houses

 Tanzanian President John Magufuli's government, through the Ministry of Communication, has issued new measures meant to prevent local media from sharing or using unapproved information.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry announced a number of changes meant to guide both the radio and television content providers, replacing the 2018 guidelines.

Among the changes introduced is barring local licensed media operations from sharing local information or airing foreign information without the approval of the concerned ministry.

Upon approval, the media house will be responsible for any aired information contradicting the regulations.

Also, licensed media  outlets are not allowed to meet and share information with a foreign journalist without the company of any government official or any official from the ministry.

In its new regulations, the local media houses are only allowed to air adult content from midnight to 5am.

The repercussions for media houses found contradicting the new regulations include having to publish an apology with an explanation.

Also, the media house will remove the content in question and will be fined.
