954 Kenyans have died in road accidents since January - NTSA

4,571 people have been affected in these accidents compared to 3,893 in the same period last year.

Some 954 Kenyans have died in road accidents across the country since January, latest data by the National Transport and Safety Authority shows.

The data indicates that this is an increase of 0.1 per cent compared to the same period last year where 953 people died.

According to the authority, a total of 4,571 people have been affected in these accidents compared to 3,893 last year - an increase of 17.4 per cent.

The data indicates that out of the 4,571 affected, 954 have died, 2,040 left with serious injuries while 1,577 with slight injuries.

Pedestrians are leading with 367 deaths followed by motorcyclists at 238 deaths and passengers in the third position with 156 deaths.

While the accidents have left 101 pillion passengers dead, 76 drivers and 16 pedal cyclists have also died.

According to the authority, reckless driving remains to be the most common cause of these accidents.

The authority said four out of every five crashes in the country can be attributed to human error and brake failure.

This includes freewheeling in an attempt to save on fuel and breaching speed limits with drivers in either circumstance likely to lose control of the vehicle.

Speeding, distracted driving, drunk driving and rains are other causes of these accidents.

Others include running red lights, night driving, potholes, design defects, tailgating, wrong-way driving and improper turns, teenage driving, drugs, tyre blowouts and animal crossings.
