In Summary

• Raila, Ruto, Mudavadi and Wetang'ula's last words on Kibra.

• They all vowed to win the seat in a hotly contested by-election.

Jubilee deputy party leader William Ruto: I want to give you people of Kibra five reasons why you should vote for Mariga.

Firstly, Kibra residents need jobs, you need good roads, you need adequate lighting and sufficient toilets. Isn't that so? We constructed the Kambi Muru-Mashimoni-Laini Saba road, through the NYS as Jubilee. We also constructed Lindi-Highrise road.

Secondly, Kibra is tired of being in the Opposition. The work that must be done here cannot be done by the Opposition. I want to tell you, there is only one candidate from the government and that person is Mariga.

Thirdly, the man of riddles has been telling you there is a journey to Canaan. Fools are no longer in this country and none should be in Kibra. That man used the Handshake deal and is now in government. And then he comes here to tell you to vote for the Opposition. Isn't that conmanship?

Fourthly, when people from Kibra came to my Karen home they complained. Let me tell you: That house in Karen is your house. I am a tenant there. All those who complained from Raila [Odinga], Musalia [Mudavadi] to [Moses] Wetang’ula, they have all been at my residence for a meal. What's the problem with hustlers from Kibra coming there, yet my wife has not complained?

Lastly, we have a plan for Kibra. What has been achieved here so far has been the work of Jubilee. Raila could not do it in 25 years. He was MP and even a Cabinet Minister for Roads. The lighting, toilets and markets have been built by Jubilee. The difference between him and me is like day and night. If he could not make a difference in 25 years, even if you give him another 100 years, there is nothing much he will achieve. I know there are no fools in Kibra. This is your home. They should stop this nonsense.

ODM leader Raila Odinga: This is the first public meeting I'm holding since President Uhuru Kenyatta and I did the handshake and we agreed that we are going to do politics with a different agenda.

We agreed we want to end tribalism and corruption, agreed to bring security in our country and the President okayed it and we did the handshake. Imran Okoth is a handshake candidate who will continue the good work his brother was doing.

The Handshake will bring a new dawn in the country. There will be no more discrimination on the basis of ethnic groups. Our critics are yapping, saying Raila has brought people in his bedroom. What is the problem if I decide to invite people to my bedroom?

On November 7, We, [Kibra residents], are embarking on a race and the horses in this race are two. One is Tangatanga and the other one is the Handshake team. The Tangatanga are the red team and the Handshake the orange team.

Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru: Do not allow other people to come and make the decision for you, people of Kibra. Hang in the Building Bridges Initiative because that is where the next government is coming from.

The handshake is between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, so no one should come here and tell you there is another candidate. The handshake candidate is Benard Okoth and you ought to stand by him, by the handshake, the BBI, President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

Senate Minority leader James Orengo: The Imran candidature has brought the country together. This is important because we are showing patriotism as a nation through Kibra and Imran is the handshake candidate and for ODM.

And even as we await Imran's triumph, we also need to put in mind the Building Bridges Initiative when it comes to us. Just like Waiguru has said, let's pull support for it because that is where the next government is coming from.

The last one is the push for integrity. It is an important virtue for a leader and we are not going to allow thieves to stand side by side with Raila Odinga. You need to send William Ruto packing and the only way to do so is by electing Imran Okoth as Kibra MP.

ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi.

My message to voters in Kibra is that the election is for and about Kibra people. You must vote for yourself, your family, your tomorrow. You're not a mattress of anybody. ANC and candidate Eliud Owallo are your partners for change, not your masters.

We've put our case clearly to the voter — Kibra cannot remain a pawn. No one should exploit the Kibra people. Together, we can rebuild the lives in Kibra for a better tomorrow. Unlike others, we didn't make Kibra a playground or a war zone for personal egos. We stuck with what Kibra needs and wants. We listened. Ours is a covenant for a new dawn with the people of Kibra. We'll always stand with Kibra in both times of plenty and scarcity. We'll not use and dump the people of Kibra.

Unlike others, I didn't go to Kibra under false pretence to reignite my career or recoup lost fortunes and glory. I don't have any preconceived conceit about the people in Kibra. Yet, that's what others have done and became candidates instead! They went to Kibra as lords, threatening the hell out of residents. "Don't do this or else..." was their campaign mantra.

Some took premature 2022 presidential ambitions to Kibra. Kibra is just a causality in their 2022 proxy wars. Their candidates are just for display, not substance. The grandmasters are the hidden candidates. What bothers Kibra residents were ignored.

But Owalo of ANC is real. He's his own person with ideas on how to work with Kibra people. ANC and Owalo will win because we are the real deal. The rest are using Kibra as an arena to shadowbox for their future fortunes. None has articulated issues other than Owalo.

Owalo resonates with Kibra because the people are tired of being used as an experiment. They don't want to be condemned to a life in penury so their lives can be exchanged for bullets or can be hired to a stranger parachuted on them.

I know Kibra will make the right choice in Owallo. That's why they've said Liwe Liwalo ni Owalo (Come what may, it's Owallo). Together, we can rebuild the lives in Kibra for a better tomorrow. We don't want leaders who will go to add numbers in Parliament We want leaders who can sponsor bills. Kibra, you know who's who. Some are thugs, others false prophets. You've seen it all and its time to flush them out.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula

We have campaigned and done our grassroots assignment well. Our Ford Kenya candidate, Khamisi Butichi, was also born and raised in Kibra and he understands the place and issues affecting the people very well.

As a result, he has developed a good manifesto to address these issues. In his manifesto, he wants to build good health, education, talent and infrastructure system. Being in contact with the people, that has enabled our candidate to remain sober and focused on our campaigns so the people of Kibra can trust him to fulfil their goals and dreams. We are confident our candidate will carry the day.

We are now looking at the IEBC to ensure the by-election is free, fair and credible. We know the IEBC has had integrity issues, which must be addressed.

We hope they will respect Kenyans so the process remains free, fair and credible. We also call on the police to live to their mandate of maintaining law and order. We know our competitors love hurling stones, but we believe the police will remain vigilant to ensure the whole day remains peaceful and orderly so the people can exercise their right to vote.

There will be lots of surprises in the Kibra by-election. We have a lot of support on the ground and this will manifest itself on the ballot. Some candidates might be popular and have the financial might, but the people will go for someone who resonates with them. Underrate us at your own peril.

We will have given everybody a run for their money. We ask the Kibra people to overwhelmingly rally behind their son if they expect to elect a leader who cares about their needs.

Butichi has networks in the constituency as he was born and raised in the area. He knows every corner of Kibra and the people know him. The people of Kibra are aware of their problems and they know exactly that only one of their own can liberate them.

The by-election does not have any implication on the 2022 polls. We know the country is going back to the campaign mood but its too early. More campaigns start next year when people will spend between 60 and 70 per cent of their time on campaigns. We have seen extravagant and reckless statements from ODM and we can assure them that we will take a legal direction. We will move to court so they can respect the law and Kenyans.
