The appointment of former Othaya MP Mary Wambui as the chairperson of the National Employment Authority has elicited varying reactions from Kenyans on Twitter.
Labour CS Ukur Yatani, through a Gazette notice dated October 14, appointed Wambui as the chairperson of NEA for a period of three years.
The agency was launched in May this year, with a mission to formulate and implement employment policies and programmes for the creation of sustainable employment for Kenyans.
Mary Wambui Munene succeeded former President Mwai Kibaki as Othaya legislator, but lost the seat in 2014 after the Court of Appeal nullified her election, ruling that it was marred with irregularities.
The agency was established in April 2016 by an Act of Parliament (the National Employment Authority Act 2016) which effectively provided the legal framework and mandate for its operations.
Wambui has been alleged to be the second wife to former President Kibaki, 87. The Wambui family claimed that Mwai married Mary in 1972 under Kikuyu customary law and they had a daughter.
However, Kibaki, in 2004, denied the allegation, saying he had only one wife - Lucy - now deceased.
On Tuesday, through the hashtag Mary Wambui, KOT questioned Wambui's ability to manage an employment agency at the time when the majority of Kenyans are jobless.
I wish to hear the ideas of Former Othaya MP and now Chairperson of National Employment Authority on unemployment of the youth.— Dr. Ouma Oluga (@fnoluga) October 15, 2019
Specifically focussing on disciplines such as Health & Engineering where 'Entrepreneurship' is not a solution to youth professionals building careers.
So former MP Mary Wambui has been appointed to head Kenya National Employment Authority! When you think you've seen it all and nothing can surprise you anymore, the government pulls another one! The consistency and dedication towards failure by this government is just shocking.— #TeamMwalimuDida (@mwalimu_dida) October 14, 2019
Honestly, someone should talk to our dear President. How can we grow our economy by recycling these old MPs?He should at least try one of us. We're now lacking direction. Likes of Mary Wambui should be providing food security uko ushago by doing farming. They're old. Acha walime!— Sammy Mohammed 🇰🇪 (@Mohasamuel) October 14, 2019
Imagine Mary Wambui chairing National Employment Authority meeting where serious policy interventions and decisions are prosecuted on youth employment. Hahahahaha— Rein (@Asamoh_) October 14, 2019
Appointing Mary Wambui in the National Employment Authority is a confirmation that Uhuru's government doesn't care about the youths in this country.Recycling failures and the old.— Bob Jim Kiama (@BobJimKiama1) October 14, 2019
