President Uhuru Kenyatta bought a bull at Sh800, 000, the price of a brand new Probox.
The bull owed by Kenya Seed’s Elgon Downs Farm in Kitale is a crossbreed and weighed 630kg.
Ben Gathuri who led the auction started with an offer of Sh150,000 and the bidding went on until the final price of Sh800,000.
This was the 32nd fat stock and beef auction that took place on Wednesday during the official opening of this year’s Nairobi Trade Fair.
Every year, during the official opening of the Nairobi Trade Fair, the President who is the patron of the ASK show starts the day at the animal auction.
Uhuru has been buying the champion bull since 2013. The reserve champion bull which came in second position also weighed 630kg and was sold at Sh800, 000. It was bought for the President by the Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
The third bull was bought at Sh450, 000. There were more than 90 animals on auction at the show, mainly Boran and crossbreeds from Kenya Seed Elgon Downs, BM & Co Farm and ADC farms.
The bulls weighted from 360kg and prices ranged between Sh250, 000 and Sh800,000.
Azariah Soi, Kenya Seed managing director, said animals from their farm in Kitale have been getting champion prices for the last seven years.
He attributed this to a combination of having good breeds and proper feeding throughout the year.
“We had 20 animals at the auction and many of them are about three years old. The secret to having good animals is having the right breeds and ensuring proper feeding. Quality of feed and care given to the animals are crucial,” Soi said.
