Veteran journalist and media manager Naim Bilal has been appointed managing director of KBC, the state broadcaster.

ICT minister Joe Mucheru announced the appointment in a gazette notice dated March 20, 2019. The contract runs for three years.

Bilal has been the director of information at the ministry, having previously worked for many years at Nation Media Group as a reporter and editor. 

Bilal's succeeds Waithaka Waihenya who retired 18 months ago.

Over the years, KBC sank into deep financial mess prompting the Auditor General to declare it technically insolvent in 2016.

In a statement, Mucheru said Bilal is expected to turnaround KBC “to wake up the sleeping giant”.

The new managing director will ensure KBC becomes the leading choice of information and news across its various broadcast channels.

Mucheru added that Bilal will ensure KBC improves its production of quality Kenyan content.

n 2009, he served as the Director of the House Live Broadcasting Project in the National Assembly under the Parliamentary Strengthening Project which was co-implemented by the State University of New York (SUNY Kenya).
