Kisumu county doctors have suspended a strike that was to start on Friday Night.

The county government committed to fully implement a collective bargain agreement signed in 2017.

Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists' Union Nyanza branch had issued a seven-day strike notice that ended on Friday.

It accused the county of not showing any commitment to meet their demands. They include promotions, payments and insurance cover, among others.

The two sides held a series of meetings of Thursday and Friday, which culminated in the 250 doctors calling off their strike.

The County Doctor’s Implementation and Monitoring Committee, whose members are drawn from KMPDU and the county government, will meet on  Monday to draw a plan to implement the CBA.

It was agreed that all the doctors will be promoted by July 31.

In a letter signed by county secretary Olango Onudi, Health chief officer Stephene Sewe and KMPDU branch secretary Onyango Steven, the county government stated it had factored adequate funds in its 2019-20 budget for the promotions.

Branch chairman Kevin Osuri had earlier said some of their colleagues were paid through vouchers. He said the county owed some of their members three months salaries.

It was resolved that all doctors who are paid through vouchers will be included in the staff payroll by April 30. All the arrears will also be paid by March 31.

“All the doctors who have not been included in the comprehensive NHIF scheme to be [enrolled] by the month of May 2019, when the county government will be signing a new contract with the NHIF office, “the letter reads.
