DPP pledges justice for victims of police brutality in Lamu

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has announced plans to establish a Justice Centre in Lamu to hasten delivery of justice.

Haji said on Wednesday the aim is to bring services closer to the people.

The centre at the Hindi GK Prison will help expedite criminal hearings and rulings in the region.

Haji was speaking at the ‘All for Justice: Closing the Gaps Service Week’ at Ndau village, Lamu East.

It was organised by his office, other stakeholders in the criminal justice system and development partners.

The DPP said he intends to build as much public trust as possible in his office's ability to deliver.

Haji assured residents his office was keen to ensure people's rights aren’t infringed by any party.

The traditional role of the DPP in any democracy is to initiate criminal proceedings

“We want to be done with the situation of cases taking too long. We want the public to have these services right where they are,” Haji said.

He expressed concern, however, that many people still don’t understand the DPP's role. They file complaints straight to his office so justice can be done, he said.
