When they returned to the Kenyan Premier League
three years ago and the calibre of players they had in their ranks, many touted Posta Rangers as a team capable of ending the top flight duo-poly of Gor Mahia and Tusker.
Not only did they have proven winners like Dennis Mukaisi, Joseph Nyaga and Joseph Mbugi among others in their ranks, they also had the resources to attract the best young talent available, Fast
forward to 2019 and the Mailmen find themselves in the unfamiliar position of trying to fend off the early fears of relegation.
“Obviously we are not where we want to be in the league but the good thing is that everybody has remained positive and we believe we have it in us to change the results. Our performances on the field have to improve and we know we can do it,” Mbugi remarked. After eight matches, John Kamau’s charges find themselves second from bottom with six points from eight matches.
This afternoon they face a Sofapaka side that has been equally struggling this year in a campaign where they thought they would be among the leading contenders fro the league title. So disappointing have been the results and performances of Batoto Ba Mungu that they had to split with their coach Melis Medo who had been on the job for barely a month. Leaky defences have been the bane of both clubs with Posta shipping in 11 goals while Sofapaka have let in one more.
Batoto Ba Mungu can point to the injury of experienced Humphrey Okoti and the departure of their goalkeepers among them Matthew Kigonya and Wycliffe Kasaya, who coincidentally is with the mailmen.
Brian Osumba and Francis Manoah who were brought in to inject new blood into the Posta side will have to start delivering soon if Posta are to avoid returning to the second tier.
In another match today, Tusker have the opportunity to close the gap on the front two when they host an unpredictable Chemelil Sugar side in Ruaraka. The brewers have not won any of their last two matches after stringing together three successive wins but will be confident of picking three points against a Chemelil side languishing in 14th place with 7 points.
Third placed Western Stima play hosts to KCB while other matches today will see cash strapped Vihiga United taking on Nzoia Sugar while Mount Kenya United will be looking for their first win against Ulinzi Stars at Kasarani.
