Police have arrested 46 people suspected to be members of the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council.

They were nabbed while having a meeting at Shelly Beach on Thursday, Likoni police boss Benjamin Rotich said.

Acting on intelligence, a multi-agency team of security officers ambushed the all-men group at the popular beach.

They are a mixture of elderly people and the youth, police said.

According to us, they were having an illegal meeting, Rotich said.

He said investigations are underway to establish the motive of the group.

Rotich said the suspects are in police custody, but did not say where they are being held.

He said they will appear

in court tomorrow.

There is an operation in Likoni to arrest more suspects.

MRC operates separatist ideologies. It group came to light in 2008 when it claimed that Mombasa should secede from Kenya to become an independent state.

The whereabouts of MRC leader Omar Mwamnuadzi is still unknown.

Last year, a Mombasa court officially declared him missing.
