MPs from pastoralist communities have protested the arrest of their counterparts Chachu Ganya (North Horr) and Ali Rasso (Saku).

The two were arrested on Monday following accusations of inciting the recent clan fights which left 14 dead in Marsabit.

Hundreds of locals fled their homes since the sporadic clashes erupted in September.

The leaders warned that the arrests will derail the ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region.

Ganya and Rasso were grilled by DCI officers in Embu last week over their suspected involvement in the skirmishes.

Governor Ali Mohamud Mohamed was also questioned.

But seven MPs drawn from Tana River, Isiolo and Marsabit counties want the two lawmakers released immediately.

They MPs Said Buya (Galole), Ali Wario Guyo (Garsen), Hassan Hulufo (Isiolo North), Ali Wario (Bura), Rehema Jaldesa (Isiolo), Qalicha Wario (Moyale) and Naomi Waqo (nominated senator).

They asked the authorities to give the local peace efforts a chance.

Bura's Wario said the two leaders have been in the forefront in bringing peace in the region.

Qalicha accused the government, by arresting the legislators, of covering up its failure to take action to end deaths in Marsabit.

Rehema called on the government to be sensitive to the areas' KCPE and KCPE students' needs instead of building up the tension.

"Our concern is the plight of students sitting the national examinations when the area is tense," she said.
