The widow to colonial era chief Koinange wa Mbiyu died on Thursday night aged 117.

Elizabeth Gathoni was the last of Koinange's six wives and one of the oldest people in the country.

Born in 1900, Gathoni is said to have been in good health and did not suffer from any ailment.

Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange eulogised her as a patriot who was dedicated to her family.

He said she was committed to preaching peace and unity in the community.

Those who interacted with her said she will be remembered for her resilience during the struggle for independence.

In the 1950s, Gathoni and her husband hosted meetings by Mau Mau freedom fighters in their home.

Koinange was labeled a rebel and Mau Mau sympathiser, which led to his arrest in 1952.

He was detained for eight years and died shortly after his release.
