A child of a police officer stationed at Juja on Saturday accidentally shot himself dead.

The boy, whose age was not disclosed, was playing with his father’s gun at their Embakasi home.

Richard Omanga of the Kenya Airports Police Unit said Constable Sammy Kiprop had left the gun unattended at his bedside drawer.

"It is believed that the son took the firearm and shot himself while playing with it," Omanga said.

The deputy OCPD said the Jericho pistol was loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition.

A spent cartridge of a 9mm bullet was recovered at the scene after the minor shot himself.

The boy was found lying in a pool of blood after officers at the residence heard gunshots from their colleague's house.

"The child was taken to Bliss hospital within Embakasi where he was pronounced dead."

"The scene was processed by scenes of crime personnel and body moved to City mortuary awaiting postmortem," the police boss said.
