State offers striking lecturers Sh10 billion

The government has made a Sh10 billion offer to lecturers to end the ongoing strike that is in its 21st day.

The State said the money will go towards adjustments of the basic salaries and house allowances of staff at public universities.

But UASU secretary general Constantine Wasonga said talked are still ongoing as they had not reached a consensus.

"Following, five hours of negotiations, the talks adjourned to tomorrow at 11 am to enable further consultations," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Wasonga said the State, through Inter Public University Council’s Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), needed time to consult on whether the offer can be used to cover pension contributions.

He said their aim was to ensure they get the best terms of service to safeguard the dignity of dons.

He also maintained the strike is still on.

“UASU strike continues until the 2013-2017 CBA is negotiated, signed, registered and implemented."

University of Nairobi students held demonstrations over the lecturers strike today.

asked the government to pay lecturers or refund students full school fees paid for this semester.
