Health experts have sounded the alarm on an excruciating shortage of female condoms in the country compared to those used by men.

Celestine Mugambi of the Kenya National Aids Control Council said it was worrying that the situation has denied women the chance to control how they protect themselves during sexual intercourse.

"Female condoms are also a bit expensive as compared to which cost as little as Sh50," Mugambi said.

"We need to promote the use of female condoms in order to reduce the high rates of HIV/Aids among women," she said.

Stanley Ngara, popularly known as "King of Condoms", told the Star that the shortage of supplies makes it hard to train women how to use the condoms.

"Most women have never seen a female condom therefore do not know how to use it. This is a challenge as some of them say if they use the female condom their partners may refuse to engage with them sexually," Ngara said.

The health workers made the comments during the celebrations of the World Female condom day, held every September 16.

It was the first time Kenya marked the day where the government, through the aids control council, announced that it will distribute more than 5000 female condoms.

"We intend to distribute the condoms to vulnerable counties starting from Kilifi to Homa Bay onwards," Ngara, who lead the campaign, said.

He also said that companies, institutions, pharmacies and supermarkets should join in the initiative towards making female condoms available.

"They should be made available in washrooms. Supermarkets also need to stock female condoms just as they do for the men's," he said.

Ngara also said a woman must not necessarily put on a female condom 8 hours before sex as is said.

"You can even wear in four to five minutes before intercourse and it will be as effective as it should be," he said.
