Anti-Counterfeit Agency inspectors on Thursday seized 276 high-end counterfeit Samsung phones worth Sh6.5 million and arrested two shopkeepers. The phones were found in two electronics shops at the Electronics Centre on Luthuli Avenue. The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Anti-Illicit Trade Agency Ltd, the appointed Samsung brand protection agency. Inspector Weldon Sigei urged customers to buy electronics from authorised dealers. “They [customers] should cultivate the culture of inquiring about clear product information on quality and huge price variations from the traders. They should also demand product warranties against their purchases,” he said. Dealers of counterfeit products are liable to jail term not exceeding five years or a fine of three times the retail value of goods, or both.
