Education CS Fred Matiang’i has flagged off to China Sh10 million
mechanical parts made by Kenyan university students.
The spare parts that were flagged off on Friday were made by students of Kabete Technical Training Institute and Nyeri National Polytechnic.
They will be used in excavators, earth movers and other machines.
The institutions won first and second place respectively in the Africa Tech Challenge.
In an address at
Kabete TTI, Matiang'i praised the students and urged those who have completed secondary education to venture into technical training.
He said courses in the field equip students with skills that make finding and creating jobs easier.
Matiang'i said the
government will invest more in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to help meet its development needs.
He noted that self-employment will be boosted and poverty reduced.
The CS was accompanied by Vocational and Technical Training PS Dinah Mwinzi and administration officials from Kabete TTI, and Nyeri Polytechnic.
The tech challenge was aimed at encouraging enrollment in technical courses, creating employment and providing skilled workers for the government and private sector.
It was organised by the Education ministry and China's AVIC International Holding Corporation.
