The Bungoma International Investment Conference has been called off. It was to be held from May 18 to 20. In a letter dated April 29, county secretary and head of public service Murumba Chiuli cited logistical problems.
The letter was addressed to the county assembly clerk and copied to Governor Kenneth Lusaka, the county assembly and Trade executive Patrick Koyi. “We shall communicate to you the new dates in due course and we regret any inconvenience that may arise out of these developments,” reads the letter.
legal problems
Murumba said they had to cancel to avoid a court battle and follow the law to avoid embarrassment at the last minute. Last week, the MCAs rejected a firm picked to organise the conference. The Budget and Appropriations Committee questioned the manner in which the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry was picked to organise and manage the conference.
“The executive had requested Sh58 million to plan for the conference, but we only passed Sh50 million in our supplementary budget because the request was very high,” committee member Okumu Majimbo said.
In a letter to the head of supply chain management dated January 20, Trade chief officer Christine Wasike indicated the KNNCI was given the sole mandate to run the conference.
“I wish to procure the consultancy services of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry to organise and manage for the Bungoma county government the Bungoma International Investment Conference,” reads the letter.
