President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday visited the Kenya Ferry Services headquarters and met senior officials.

After the meeting, the President toured the parastatal’s offices in Likoni, Mombasa county, and used the ferry to cross the channel.

He was accompanied by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala and KFS officials.

Old vessels, which are the only way to the South Coast, have had frequent mechanical breakdowns and are costly to maintain.

The government’s plan to build the Dongo Kundu bypass in a bid to decongest Mombasa and offer an alternative route to the South Coast are at an advanced stage.

Another solution to the congestion is the proposed construction of the Changamwe by-pass that will link the western part of Mombasa and the North Coast.
