A British doctor has told a Mombasa court the son of aristocrat Alexander Monson was hit to death using a blunt object.

Jason Payne told the court on Friday the injury damaged his brain.

“A report from the pathologist showed the death was caused by a brain trauma which was inflicted by a blunt force,” he said.

Payne said after reviewing clinical possibilities based on the evidence, the timeline of Monson’s alleged unconsciousness as a result of drugs are not consistent.

He testified before senior principal magistrate Richard Odenyo during an inquest into the death of Monson, who died in police custody.

He said the timing of the injury on the head cannot be specified, but it would be between 3am-3.30am on the morning of May 19, 2012.

Payne said Monson would have been saved had the police rushed him to the hospital.

He differed with a conclusion in one of the medical reports indicating the head injury was unlikely to be due to a police baton.

The inquest continues on October 6.
