SAYANI Investments has said it is the registered owner of Caxton House situated within the city centre.

In a letter, the company said there has been no warrant of arrest issued against its directors as reported by the Star in April.

In March, one person was killed, scores wounded and property worth millions of shillings looted, when more than 200 people raided the building on Kenyatta Avenue.

The gangs, who arrived in lorries and matatus, sealed off the building on Kenyatta Avenue and Standard Street with mabatis.

Ownership of the three-storey building with more than 250 tenants and estimated to be worth Sh900 million has been in dispute since its lease expired in 2007.

National Land Commission vice chairperson Abigael Mukolwe, however, said documents in their possession show the building belonged to Sayani Investment Ltd.

“To the best of our knowledge the ownership of this building is in dispute. The original owner Sayani had applied for renewal of their lease,

which expired in 2007, but we have been going through the documents to make the final decision on it,” Mukolwe told the Star in March.

Sayani said NLC extended the lease agreements.

"There is no ownership dispute as SIL is the registered owner of the property, which has been confirmed by the National Land Commission. SIL is not therefore an interested party in the property. Approvals for extension of the lease were received by SIL in 2008 and confirmed in 2015 by NLC. No other party has any legal claim in the property," the company said in a statement.

SIL said all the renovations currently going on in the building have been permitted.
