UASIN GISHU Senator Isaac Melly was yesterday beaten up by riot police during protests at University of Eldoret.

The demonstration was meant to eject vice chancellor Teresa Akenga, whom area leaders accused of nepotism and skewed employment.

More than 10 MCAs were also beaten up at Sokomo village as they tried to force their way into the university, before police dispersed the crowd.

Melly said they will not relent until the VC is fired.

He accused the police of using force yet the demonstration was peacefull.

Melly said Eldoret police boss Nelson Taliti and Kapsoya police boss Albert Kipchumba ordered officers to beat his bodyguard Kimame Simatwo.

Simatwo was handcuffed and taken to police cells.

“The VC has been hiring staff from her community on permanent and pensionable terms,” one student who did not want to be named told the Star.

“Those from a different community have worked here for many years but they have not been promoted or hired permanently.”

Melly and Birgen were admitted at Elgon View Hospital with injuries.
