President William Ruto on Thursday hosted more than 5,000 artisans from Nairobi County at State House, Nairobi.

The engagement was aimed at strengthening the informal sector and expanding opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

The meeting brought together skilled workers from various trades, including carpenters, welders, mechanics, electricians, tailors, beauty professionals and other members of the Jua Kali sector, as the government reaffirmed its commitment to job creation and enterprise growth.

During the meeting, President Ruto said artisans remain at the heart of Kenya's economy, noting that the government's economic transformation agenda places special emphasis on empowering small businesses through access to affordable credit, modern working spaces, markets and skills development.

"We are committed to creating an enabling environment where every artisan can grow their business, create jobs and improve their livelihoods. The Jua Kali sector is a key pillar of our economic transformation agenda," the president said.

Ruto told the artisans that the government is investing in programmes that will help informal businesses transition into competitive enterprises capable of contributing more significantly to the country's economy.

He noted that initiatives such as affordable financing, technical training and improved market access are intended to unlock the sector's full potential.

He further urged the artisans to take advantage of government empowerment programmes designed to support youth and entrepreneurs, saying these initiatives are meant to stimulate production, expand businesses and create employment opportunities across the country.

The gathering also provided an opportunity for the artisans to present challenges affecting their businesses, including access to capital, affordable workspaces, taxation and reliable markets for their products.

The President assured them that the government would continue to engage with stakeholders to address these concerns and improve the operating environment for small enterprises.

The meeting forms part of a series of State House engagements targeting different economic sectors as the government seeks to strengthen partnerships with industry players and grassroots entrepreneurs.

Similar forums have previously brought together leaders, professionals and representatives from various sectors to discuss development priorities and economic empowerment.

The engagement comes as the Kenya Kwanza administration intensifies efforts to promote manufacturing, entrepreneurship and job creation through support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, which employ millions of Kenyans and remain a critical driver of economic growth.
